Mixtape Review: OKE By. The Game

OKE cover

When it comes to gangster rap The Game is an artist that has always managed to keep it alive. Regardless of the track that he is rapping on you can clearly tell he once lived a much darker life. The cut throat approach that he has taken on all  his other albums and mixtapes has come back in full force on OKE (Operation Kill Everything).

MIXTAPE: OKE MIXTAPE

Notable Tracks:

#2  The tape opens strong with the second track “life is but a dream”. The  story told on “life is but a dream” is a perfect representation of how The Game views both street life and the industry.  ”

#3  The ball keeps rolling with  “Astronaut Pussy – Welcome to California” (ft. Skeme, Too Short, Schoolboy Q & Stacy Barthe). This 10 minute two part song which could have been broke up into 2 different tracks is a great follow up to #2. “Astronaut Pussy” in my opinion has the best hook (Sang by Stacy Barthe) of any track on the entire mixtape. The Game’s verse on this track is not nearly as lyrical as #2 but it has a much faster pace that matches the rest of the artists featured. Skeme is an artist that I have been following over the past year and clearly has the best verse on the track. (Skeme Review coming soon…). The transition from “Astronaut Pussy” to “Welcome to California ” has a great electronic sound to that makes for a perfect ending to the song. Welcome to California has a much slower pace to it that I believe is a little awkward for a non R&B artists.

#4 The momentum continues with  “In The City” (ft. Fred The Godson & Sam Hook). The beat to this song is truly amazing. This beat sounds like it came straight out the 80s with the electric piano audio and an added bass drum makes it perfect for rapping over. The game kills his verse once again  and is wrapped up with a solid verse from Fred The Godson.

#7 Following a couple weak tracks the mixtape regains its strength with ” Breakfast With Al Pacino”. This is one of my favorite tracks off the tape. The beat once again has a great old school feel to it that allows for you to just sit back and vibe to it. The flow that Game brings to this track is where he thrives best and really allows for listeners to respect him as an artist. The games verse ends at 2:00 allowing for the beat to ride out for another 1:39 which is great.

# 15 Unfortunately the 8 tracks before this one just simply weren’t as memorable as the 4 listed above but “Super Throwed” (ft. Juicy J) is a good one. This is the type of track that shakes the trunk.  Juciy J gives a catchy hook that will stay in your head through out the day and the Game delivers 2 verses that are perfect for the feel of this song.

#16 “Maybe in another life”  Is a track to just listen to and enjoy the story.

#18  “Just so you know”  Is another solid track from the game. I enjoyed this one because the game does the hook himself, which makes for a perfect way to wrap up the whole mixtape. Even though this isn’t the last track of the mixtape it really should have been.

This mixtape as a whole has a very unique sound to it that you may not hear very often in hip hop. With beats straight from the 80s,hooks that will stick in your head for days and verses from the Game that we all have grown to know this is a mixtape that you will not want to miss.
