Twerking Videos and Society.

Well this isn’t exactly about hip hop but it is a subject that should be addressed. Twerking has taken the nation by storm and it seems like you cant go on the internet without seeing somebody shaking their booty across your screen. This way of “dancing” has caught so much momentum that it has worked its way into the official Oxford dictionary. The definition is as follows:

verb [no  object] informal

  • dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance:just wait till they catch their daughters twerking to this song  twerk it girl, work it girl

So that makes it official, this trend will forever go down in history. Unfortunately this is the type of trend that America will look back on and scratch our heads wondering “Why did we ever do that”. “Twerking” has always been a popular dance in hip hop music videos, but ever since it jumped out music videos and on to the internet ,”twerkers” have proceeded to make an ass off themselves (See what I did there..). Instagram, Youtube and Vine to this date is loaded with women putting their twerking skills on display for the whole world to see, with Miley Cyrus as the most notable twerker that shocked the world with her VMA performance.  The problem that I have with this is, the negative message that is being sent to the youth of America.  Think about it this way, if a girl was to post a video of herself twerking vs. a video or her walking across the stage at a graduation ceremony….we all know which one would get more “likes”.  I understand that its all in good fun but its not a good look..
